SOUTH AFRICAN LOVE STORY #2:
PART I & PART II (DIPTYCH)
1985–1987

This quilt tells the story of two lovers living during Apartheid—institutionalized segregation and discrimination in South Africa from 1948 to 1991. Apartheid was openly based on the notion of white supremacy and involved the systematic repression of the black majority.
The story is narrated by Sheba, who escapes South Africa during Apartheid and becomes a fashion model in the United States but is separated from her lover Batu. Five years after their separation, they are reunited in New York City.
One of the characters in the story calls for “freedom, for majority rule . . . the death of Apartheid . . . [and the] immediate release of Nelson Mandela and all political prisoners!”
