ACA Galleries is delighted to present a solo showing of new monumental works in fiber by multimedia Afro-Caribbean American portrait artist Kandy G Lopez for this year’s edition of EXPO Chicago.

Opening April 24, this marks the artist’s first solo presentation in Chicago. The vibrant selection of seven recent portraits offers novel reflections on the artist’s continued engagement with identity and community. For years, Lopez has drawn inspiration from the myriad individuals she crosses paths with—friends, family and strangers alike. Whether depicting a solo individual or joyful group, all of her works are imbued with metaphorical and psychological significance, reflecting the artist’s reverence for the individuals she represents.

Lopez is particularly interested in the potential of multimedia portraiture to further conversations surrounding the meaning of “otherness.” Based on source images taken while kneeling and looking up at her subject, her fiber works counter historical hierarchies by emphasizing the agency and power of her muses.

Born in New Jersey, Kandy G Lopez moved with her family to Florida at a young age. In her practice as an artist and educator, Lopez is interested in generating dialogues between the artwork and the viewer. She creates out of the necessity to learn something new about her people and culture. In her own words, “if I’m not learning from my materials and how it affects the message, it's not worth creating.”
