The Florence Foundation, in collaboration with ACA Galleries, is proud to present the first European solo exhibition of Afro-Caribbean American portrait artist and educator Kandy G Lopez. Celebrated for her innovative “fiber paintings,” Lopez has developed a practice that transforms textile into a medium of presence and testimony. Through works such as Hispaniola (2024), Paperwater 2.0 (2024) and the landmark America Does It (2019), she articulates resilience, dignity and visibility, positioning handwoven portraiture as a repository of cultural identity and collective memory.
Lopez approaches art and teaching as inseparable pursuits, where each portrait becomes both an artistic statement and an act of instruction, rendering textile a medium of representation and knowledge. Each figure emerges as both individual and archetype, embodying strength, vulnerability and the enduring complexity of representation. This philosophy resonates directly with the Florence Foundation’s mission to foster equal opportunity, mentorship and cultural exchange among high-achieving students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Opening Reception: Monday October 20, 7pm
