HOUSTON, TX – This spring, the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) presents Allegiance to the People, the first Texas solo exhibition by Afro-Caribbean American multidisciplinary portrait artist Kandy G. Lopez. Curated by Danielle Finnerman, the exhibition opens with a public reception on Friday, March 27 at 6 p.m. and will remain on view through Saturday, June 6.

Born in New Jersey and raised in South Florida by Dominican parents, Lopez’s work is deeply shaped by diasporic experience and the ongoing negotiation of identity across cultures. Hailed by Vogue as “the Barkley L. Hendricks of fiber art,” Lopez creates striking portraiture that honors the power, dignity, and layered identities of individuals and communities historically rendered invisible.

Through bold color, layered textiles, and dynamic portraiture, Lopez captures the vibrancy and hybridity of Caribbean and urban American life. The people she portrays are not symbolic archetypes but individuals she encounters in her daily life. Each portrait reflects lived experience—embodying cultural memory, resilience, vulnerability, and unmistakable swagger.

"Getting Kandy to Houston has been a goal of the Museum for the past year and a half," said Danielle Finnerman. "With Lisa Farrington coming as well is simply our cup running over!"

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public programs. Lopez will participate in an artist conversation with author and art historian Lisa Farrington on Saturday, March 28 at 6 p.m. Farrington will also discuss her newest book, The World Before Racism: An Art Story, earlier that day at Kindred Stories at 2 p.m.

Lopez will return to HMAAC on Saturday, May 9, to lead two hands-on workshops at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., offering participants insight into her artistic practice and portrait methodology.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Lopez describes her partnership with HMAAC as both authentic and energizing:

“It’s been amazing—very down to earth,” Lopez says. “I’m someone who appreciates straightforward communication, and working with HMAAC has been exactly that. It’s been a fantastic experience.”

According to HMAAC CEO Davinia Reed, "We are so fortunate to have the work of Kandy Lopez at the Museum. She is a worldwide talent our audiences will be excited to experience."

Following its presentation in Houston, Allegiance to the People will travel to additional venues, with upcoming exhibitions planned in Florida and Tennessee.

Exhibition sponsors include H-E-B, John Guess, Jr. and Melanie Lawson, and the HMAAC Board of Directors.
