The capital’s galleries and museums have been packed to the rafters with outstanding exhibitions this year.
We’ve traversed the careers of the world’s leading artists in blockbuster retrospectives and zoomed in on the detail of individual masterpieces.
Our critic Ben Luke has rounded up his pick of the very best exhibitions of 2019.
Faith Ringgold, Serpentine Galleries
Faith Ringgold’s work is “relentlessly powerful across her career” said Ben Luke in his review. “From her early paintings — the American People series, reflecting on racial injustice and the civil rights struggle and Black Light, focusing on painterly colour and black identity — to her quilt paintings, weaving together personal stories with African American history, this show is both harrowing and joyous.”
