ACA Galleries Announces Expansion to Second Gallery Space in Chelsea

ACA Press Release

ACA Galleries is pleased to announce the opening of its second gallery space located at 173 Tenth Avenue (20th St) in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. The expansion is the evolution of ACA’s central mission: to honor the gallery’s deep historical roots by reimagining them in a contemporary context.

The first exhibition will be a solo presentation — Kandy G Lopez: Situational Identity, New Works in Fiber — on view September 5 through October 21, 2023. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, September 14, from 7 to 9pm.

ACA Galleries (American Contemporary Art Gallery) has been at the vanguard of American art for almost a century. Founded in 1932, ACA was one of three galleries in New York specializing in American art. In 1935, ACA hosted the inaugural meetings of the American Artists’ Congress, the precursor to Works Project Administration (WPA), federal programs that aided American artists and funded public art projects during the depression.

The new location, measuring over 2000 square feet of exhibition space, is located on the ground floor corner of 20th Street and 10th Avenue in Chelsea. The new space will allow ACA Galleries to explore areas that traditionally were not presented before such as photography, video art and non-traditional media.

ACA Galleries will maintain its current space at 529 West 20th Street, 5th floor by appointment only, where there will be special events and programming throughout the year and a rotating selection of the gallery’s collection will always be on view. Significant legacy exhibitions will be presented with an eye towards re-examining the historical program in a contemporary context.
