ACA Galleries is pleased to present A Black Perspective, a group exhibition of artworks by prominent African American artists created between 1945 and 2015. Since its inception, ACA has been committed to showing work by black artists; giving Aaron Douglas, Ernie Crichlow, Barkley Hendricks and Charles White some of their first shows and later representing Benny Andrews, Romare Bearden estate, Richard Mayhew, Faith Ringgold, Aminah Robinson and others.
Drawn from the gallery’s extensive inventory, the show includes Benny Andrews, Romare Bearden, Joseph Delaney, Jacob Lawrence, Richard Mayhew, Faith Ringgold, Aminah Robinson, and Charles White, among others.
An exhibition co-curated with ACA Galleries is currently on view at the Houston African American Museum of Art and Culture through September 4, 2021.
Highlights:
Jacob Lawrence, Gypsies, 1948 is rare egg tempera painting which has been in the same collection since it was purchased from the legendary Downtown Gallery over 70 years ago. It is the first time it has been included in a gallery exhibition.
Faith Ringgold: South African Love Story: Part 1 and Part II , a story quilt created in 1983 has not been on public view since the 1980s.
The traveling exhibition organized by the Serpentine in London is currently on view at the Glenstone Museum in Potomac, MD through October 24, 2021.
The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City will present a retrospective of Ringgold’s work February 14 through May 30, 2022.
Aminah Robinson: A retrospective of her work is currently on view at The Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio through October 3, 2021. A catalogue is available.
Richard Mayhew: ACA will present a solo show of his work at the Armory Art Fair in NY September 8-12, 2021. The artist’s first monograph Richard Mayhew: Transcendence, was published by Chronicle Books in 2020. He was included in the HBO documentary “Black Art: In the Absence of Light”.
