Summer in the City
Summer in the City June 7 through August 1, 2025 ACA Galleries 173 Tenth Avenue, New York
Opening Reception: Saturday June 7, 4-6pm
Summer in the City opens June 7 at ACA Galleries, and it’s a love letter to New York in all its maddening, magnificent glory. The show spans a century of artists obsessed with the city—not just the skyline, but the hum of the streets, the geometry of the fire escapes, the poetry of pigeons, the solitude in a crowd.
This isn’t some sleepy historical stroll. It’s a cross-generational chorus, a clamor of styles and sensibilities—etchings, oil paintings, serigraphs, pastels—all elbowing each other for space on the walls, just like New Yorkers on the subway. The work buzzes with grit, charm, heartbreak, and a whole lot of hope.
These artists—John Baeder’s nostalgia, Danielle DeJesus’s electric realism, Richard Haas’s vertiginous architectural feats, Joseph Peller’s vivid street scenes, and Doug Safranek's precise renderings in egg tempera, to name just a few—don’t just depict the city. They live it. Some through linework as fine as scaffolding, others through color that screams across the canvas like a siren in the night.
This is the city as muse, menace, and mirror. No filters, no fantasy. Just artists showing us New York the way it moves through them. It’ll remind you why you put up with the noise.
Featured artists include: John Baeder, Saul Chase, Danielle DeJesus, David DeSimone, Richard Haas, Claire Heidinger, Steven Katz, Greg Lamarche, Ernest Lawson, Joseph Peller, Doug Safranek, and Edmund Yaghjian. |
