This solo presentation celebrates the iconic mindscape paintings of Richard Mayhew, (b. 1924).
Landscape is often overlooked as a contemporary subject, and over seven decades Mayhew has liberated the genre from the traditional style of observation and replication. This departure draws from the deep well of the artist’s memories, emotions, unique color sensibilities and the abstract possibilities of nature in painting.
A member of the legendary artist group, Spiral, fellow members included Charles Alston, Emma Amos, Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, Charles White and Hale Woodruff among others.
Mayhew has had more than 40 solo exhibitions, taught for nearly 30 years and been a tireless arts advocate and activist.
His work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; Art Institute of Chicago; IL; National Museum of American Art, DC; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; and the De Young Museum; CA. He is also a member of the National Academy of Design and has held teaching positions at the Art Students League, Hunter College and Pennsylvania State University, among others.
