Kandy G Lopez b. 1987
Kandy G Lopez was born in New Jersey and moved with her family to Florida when she was young. She received her BFA and BS from the University of South Florida, concentrating in Painting and in Marketing and Management. She received her MFA with a concentration in Painting from Florida Atlantic University in 2014. She has taught at Florida Atlantic University, Daytona State College, and is now teaching as an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, Media and Arts at the Halmos College of Art & Sciences at NOVA Southeastern University.
As an Afro-Caribbean visual artist, Lopez is eager to be challenged materialistically and metaphorically when representing marginalized individuals that inspire and move her. Her works are created out of the necessity to learn something new about her people and culture. Lopez is interested in developing a nostalgic dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. If she’s not learning from her materials and how it affects the message, it's not worth creating.
Lopez has had numerous solo and group exhibitions across North America, including most recently at the Orlando Museum of Art in Florida where she received the 2025 People’s Choice Award. This fall, Lopez anticipates her first international solo exhibition at the Fondation Florence in Paris, as well museum shows at the Armory Art Center and Ringling College of Art + Design where the artist will also have a residency. Lopez’s second solo exhibition at ACA Galleries titled, Textile Truths: Faces of Resilience, is set to open on November 1.

Florida Prize in Contemporary Art
At The Orlando Museum of Art May 31 - Aug 24, 2025We are delighted to announce that Kandy G Lopez’s work has been selected for the ‘Florida Prize in Contemporary Art,’ organized by the Orlando Museum of Art to bring new recognition to the most progressive artists in the state. This year’s Florida Prize artists address timely topics such as our connections with ancestry, personal and collective memory, and the ties that bind us together. They also explore our interwoven relationship with the environment—from urban decay, to gentrification, place-making, belonging, and the natural world as well as the virtual realm. Another recurring theme is a concern for making the unseen visible, from invisible energies to camouflaged identities, marginalized youth to laboring hands, erased markers of history, and the hidden layers of a home. Above all, the exhibition highlights the distinctive voices of ten artists who present poignant and impactful narratives across a wide array of mediums—including fiber, painting, paper, drawing, concrete, ceramics, immersive virtual projections, and site-specific installations. As a survey exhibition, the Florida Prize offers a vivid snapshot of the state’s cultural vitality, showcasing some of the most compelling work being produced in Florida today.Read more -
